SECTION 3: MEDICAL

RESPONSIBILITIES | MEDICAL EQUIPMENT | MEDICINES | TREATMENTS | DISEASES | SPECIES

Who in the Star Trek shows to watch for clues or examples:
McCoy, Phlox, Crusher, Pulaski, Bashir, Voyager's EMH

RESPONSIBILITIES:
A medical officer is required to protect the health and well being of the Ship, Crew and Captain. Due to their Hippocratic oath, the CMO is required to provide medical assistance wherever it is needed. This could bring the officer at odds with their superiors, but you must always remember to never endanger the ship. It is your prime responsibility. The medical officer is responsible for all medical procedures from the smallest cut to full surgery onboard the ship. They also have the responsibility to ensure all biohazard protocols have been implemented. When on away missions, they must be available to provided diagnosis and instantaneous medical treatment, lest if requirements are not available, return to the ship with the injured patient to initiate treatment on board. Similarly, it is the CMO's responsibility to ensure the away team beams down to a non bio-hazardous area before a team is permitted to leave the ship. Transporter biohazard protocols can only be released under the CMO's approval. If the biofilter detects a biohazardous element in a crewmemeber and will not permit beam up of that crewperson, it is the medical officers responsibility to go down to the planet and treat the crewperson. Never allow any possibility of transfer of biohazardous material to the ship. The CMO is the only officer aboard that can relieve a Captain from duty, provided ONLY if there is a medical reason to do so. When there is no counselor aboard, it can result that you will be called upon to fill such duties. Tread warily though, often people just need someone to discuss there problems with. Medicine covers a wide range of activities not only restricted to the healing of wounded crewpersons. It should be remembered that you are also called upon to heal family members. For that reason, between sim logs, could include details of treatments of children, pregnancies, physiotherapies, medical research and experiments,

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT:

The most famous of all medical equipment, is the HYPOSPRAY. A hypospray is a medical instrument used to administer interchangeable medical vials, containing low-viscosity medicines, both intravenously or subcutaneously, by employing a pinpoint high pressure low volume microscopic aerosuspension stream, thus allowing no mechanical penetration of the epidermis. Certain types of medication can be formulated for a somewhat wider sprayer pattern, resulting in lesser penetration into the epidermis, but yielding a higher rate of absorption due to the greater skin area exposed to the drug. Medical vials containing differing medical solutions interchangeable and snapped onto the bottom of the hypospray.

A medical tricorder is essentially, a medical specific sensor and analysis device, specially set up as a combination of a standard tricorder, with the added specialized medical peripheral device (MP). Powered by a sarium krellide power cell, which has a operative time of 18 hrs, the MP can scan using high resolution sensors, giving diagnostics and analysis of a wide range of bio functions. The computing section of the Mp does a majority of the analysis work, but in addition to the tricorder, is a formidable tool, allowing for interaction between MP, Tricorder and Shipboard computing systems(i.e. starfleet medical database), and provision of data storage facility, within the memory of the tricorder when on away missions.

An AUTOSUTURE is the preferred medical instrument used to close open wounds similar to the use of catgut sutures in the early twentieth century. Once the edges of the wound are joined together, a BIOGENERATIVE FIELD can be employed to accelerate the cellular growth and repair the damaged tissue. Use of the biogenerative field, before the application of the autosuture is pointless, as the wound will still be open, bleeding (or if your an android- leak) and susceptible to secondary infections. For this reason the wound is sealed together, then healed with biogenerator.

When fixing an android, approximately 1.3 kilograms of bioplast sheeting will repair most exterior damages. The neural pathways are generally constructed from bitanium metal. A Chief Engineer is recommended to assist any treatment.

BARISTATIC FILTER is a device used to remove air pollution in a planet's atmosphere. The entire process requires the monitoring by the Ops and Medical officers.

NITROGEN NARCOSIS is a hazard of deep-sea diving. It is a cause of the replacement of oxygen in oxyhaemoglobin with nitrogen. The resultant anoxia produced disorientation, hallucination and lack of judgment in the victims. This phenomenon is similar to temporal narcosis.

TRANSPORTER PSYCHOSIS is a rare medical disorder caused by a breakdown of neurochemical molecules during transport. Transporter psychosis was first diagnosed in 2209 by researchers. The condition affected the higher brain functions, as well as autonomic systems and body motor functions. Victims were found to suffer from paranoid delusions, multi-infarct dementia. tactile and visual hallucinations, and psychogenic hysteria. Peripheral symptoms included sleepless, accelerated heart rate, myopia, muscular spasms, and dehydration. This problem was eliminated with the development of the multiplex pattern buffer, found in UCIP transporters to Larosian Virus - Mild disorder, commonly recognized by a subjects amorous behavior and other out of the normal behavior.

SPECIES SPECIFICS

Vulcans:
Humanoid race native to planet Vulcan. Because their planet has a higher gravity than Earth, and its atmosphere is thinner, Vulcans in an Earth-normal environment demonstrate greater physical strength and more acute hearing than humans. You will find their heart where your liver is. Plus, when pricked, expect green to come out and not red :-). The intensity of the Vulcan sun caused the Vulcans to evolve a secondary eyelid to protect retina. Though sometimes its best to stand back, when injured, Vulcans concentrate their strength, blood, and antibodies onto the injured organs in a type of self-induced hypnosis. Pon farr - Reoccurring Vulcan condition that naturally occurs every seven years of their adult life, resulting the need to return to their home planet to mate. Symptoms, include, not eating or sleeping, and sometimes violent sexual behavior and irrationality.

Klingons:
The Klingon body incorporates multiple redundancies for nearly all vital bodily functions. This characteristic, known as "brak'lul", gives Klingon warriors enormous resiliency in battle. Klingons have no tear ducts, and their blood is a lavender-colored fluid.

Trill:
A joined species comprised of a humanoid host and a small vermiform symbiont that resides in an internal abdominal pocket of the host body. Most of the personality and memories of the Trill reside in the symbionts, which are extremely long-lived, although the host also contributes personality traits to the joined life-form. Upon death of the host body, a Trill symbiont can be transplanted into another host. Once joined, the host and symbiont become biologically interdependent, and after 93 hours, neither can survive without the other. Trill hands are naturally cold. But only in temperature :)

Ferengi:
Careful where you look, you will find they have an unusual four-lobed brain. Betazoids cannot read Ferengi minds because of this.

Tribble:
Soft, furry, warm-blooded animal sold as pet by interstellar traders. Tribbles are bisexual and capable of reproducing at prodigious rated, although they will stop breeding when food is withdrawn. They number of times they multiply is endless, careful!

Betazoid:
Race of humanoid telepaths from the UCIP planet Betazed. The normal gestation {carrying of young in the womb between conception and birth} of a betazoid is ten months.
