BACKGROUND:

Kieran was born in 2352 on the Federation Colony Barisa Prime. A backwater colony on the edge of Tzenkethi space, it was the posting requested by Connor MacDuff, Kieran's MCPO father. His choice of post had been motivated primarily by his desire to protect his Ramuran wife, Kellith, from detection, and forced repatriation to Ramura. Kellith's pregnancu was a difficult one, and, as a result, Kieran was an only child. On Barisa Prime, he grew up during the years of mounting tension between the Federation and the Tzenkethi, which would culminate in war. When Kieran was seven, his father was reposted to the Utopia Planitia shipyards. While Kieran enjoyed the exposure this gave him to his father's ancestral home, Kellith MacDuff became ill shortly thereafter. As a result of her attempts to medically-inhibit her Ramuran pheremones, her body was irreparably harmed. When Kieran was 13, after almost six years of caring for his mother during her decline, Kellith died.

The illness and demise of his mother, coupled with his own medical problems as a result of his only semi-compatible ancestry, made the pursuit of medicine a natural choice for young Kieran. Connor's lifelong dedication to Starfleet, second only to his love for Kellith, had ensured that young Kieran had grown up around all things Starfleet. Therefore, his pursuit of a Starfleet officer's commission seemed appropriate as well.

Kieran excelled in the Arts and Sciences at Starfleet Academy, while only maintaining passing grades in many other disciplines. Medical courses seemed second nature to him. His first posting out of Starfleet Academy, a requirement before being allowed to enroll in Starfleet Medical Academy's prestigious Edinburgh campus, was as a Research Assistant aboard the USS Yosemite, an Oberth-class Science and Research vessel. After completing his studies at the Medical Academy, immersing himself in both his studies *and* the Scottish culture, of which his father spoke so fondly, Kieran was posted to the reconstructed New Farpoint Station for his surgical residency. Less than two months after being promoted to Assistant Chief Medical Officer of the Station, he was promoted once more, and transferred to Starbase 177, as a newly-minted Lieutenant and Chief Medical Officer.

PERSONALITY PROFILE:

Kieran is outgoing, energetic to the point of borderline hyperactivity. A good day is one that begins with a pre-dawn run, anywhere but on a holodeck. He would then submerge himself in a medical dilemma, whether it is his latest research project, or a particularly stubborn ailment in need of curing. His father, a Starfleet MCPO and Dockmaster, passed along his love for a wide variety of homemade non-Terran cuisine. An evening would not be complete without time spent with his hands wrapped lovingly around one of his musical instruments, which are the outlet to which he turns when he must solve a mental quandary. Competitive to a fault, Kieran has learned to appear good-natured when admitting defeat, but not to *enjoy* it. Ordinarily quite gregarious, he is only self-conscious and secretive when discussing his biochemical Ramuran characteristics, both because of their unusual nature, and the Ramuran genetic predisposition towards secrecy; a disposition balanced by the gregarious, zest-for-life outlook Kieran inherited from his father. Interpersonally, she comes across as affable, unconsciously flirtatious, and book-smart, but not overly wise. Like his body, his mind is constantly in motion, planning experiments, composing music, adapting recipes to his own personal likes and dislikes, and seeking to cure whatever ailments present themselves. He often has difficulty delegating tasks, as his tendency towards perfectionism typically creates in him a desire to take a task from start to finish personally. No problem is too difficult - the impossible is merely a challenge, and an opportunity for innovation. Perhaps Kieran's greatest difficulty is, when off duty, maintaining even a semblance of professional distance from his fellow crewmen, as he believes in working hard, and playing harder. His overactive mind tends to make him overly talkative as well, for he can be discussing the finer points of a classical composition while engaged in complicated research, without the two conflicting.

PHYSICAL PROFILE:

Kieran Talus MacDuff is a humanoid male of slim build, and above average height. Born to Human and Ramuran parents, the physical characteristics typical of a Ramuran male are more subtle. Male Ramurans have enlarged earlobes, which up and back to a point. It is not uncommon for these, Kieran's only Ramuran secondary characteristics, to be mistaken for an indication of Romulan ancestry. However, his coloring and pigmentation is more akin to typical Human and Ramuran norms. The light, penetrating color of Kieran'seyes is what most people notice first about him physically. His skin is pale, but he tans - burns, really, quite easily. His thick, curly black hair, worn a bit long for Starfleet standards, tends to cover the top of his ears, leaving only the slightly-enlarged lobes visible. His lopsided grin can be disarming, and his soft voice bears the tiniest hint of his father's Scottish heritage. His fingers are long and thin, well-suited to both medicine and classical music, his two greatest passions. His physique is that of a long-distance runner; thin, but with arms and legs like cordwood.

Apart from his ears, his Ramuran heritage reveals itself primarily in it's non-physical characteristics. Full-blooded Ramurans have the ability to release a unique pheromone. Most humanoid, Terran-subtype species are susceptible to the pheromone, which, within a handful of hours of parting company with a Ramuran, causes them to forget having met the Ramuran. Kieran's mixed heritage has diluted this involuntary response. This, combined with gene therapy from an early age, has reduced the presence of the pheromone within Kieran's system substantially. As a result, only when under extreme duress does his body release the pheromone, as a defense mechanism. Ramurans have, for generations, genetically engineered themselves to be immune to most forms of scanning technology, both medical and other. Kieran's mixed heritage makes his medical scans appear to be those of a Terran male, whose genes have been slightly, and haphazardly, resequenced.
