October 2007 - USS Eagle

The USS Eagle is a Star Trek action/adventure sim based on the original series movie era. Set in 2293 before Praxis explodes, there are new chances for peace, new enemies to fight and old enemies to foil. Those with real life and Star Trek technical experience are most welcome. So come, play, and keep those phasers ready. And if you are really brave, put up your feet in the wardroom to discuss superstring theory with the CO over ouzo and calamari.

History of the USS Eagle

The USS Eagle was launched in August 1999. We had a very rough start as unknown to us, our CO/GM was having health problems. For about five months, we did not sim regularly and many of the senior players were in other sims burning out and spread thin. Many gave up on the Eagle and left.

When I took over, we started to renew and rebuild. One of our new members started our main website. Another member taught me the basics so I could take over the site about a year after it began and start other sites on other aspects of the game. The website on Tripod ends up playing a critical role in recruiting. The Eagle is able to sustain herself with recruits on the strength of our website alone at http://usseagle2185.tripod.com ((I highly recommend each sim start its own website. If anyone here wants to start a site and needs some help on the basics to get going, please contact me.))

To me the success story for the Eagle illustrates that one person can make a difference no matter what their position in a game or in life. Whether you play the lowest ranking JO in the game, who ends up being the new Captain or the person that sims for just a few months but has the initiative to recommend and start the website or the person that spends two painful hours teaching someone to manage and build one, there is a part to play that can make a difference to the game and a difference to others. In real life, you too can be the one that help someone else turn their life around get the ball rolling for a movement to affect social change. Even five or twenty minutes as a kind stranger at a bus stop can do it. One person, indeed, can make a difference to anything or anyone.

What's Happening Now?

It doesn't look good for our heroes on the USS Eagle. I don't know how we will survive out gunned and out teched ;o) ... but it promises.... to be more fun!

The USS Eagle has been badly damaged from several attacks of different groups and factions after one of our passengers. The USS Brazil came to assist us but was attacked by mysterious ship that appeared out of no where. She identified herself as the USS Vanguard and appears to be a Federation Constitution class ship. She was hunting the USS Eagle, but attacked the USS Brazil when she came to assist us. The Brazil and Eagle are now conducting joint repairs and hiding behind a conveniently ;o) located planet with unusual magnetic poles that of course ::coughs:: disrupt sensors and transporters. (( http://usseagle2185.tripod.com/rbwomzb28cengbro.html ))

Unknown to most of the crew, two intruders are onboard the USS Eagle. The man that most people assume is the Captain, has told a very select few onboard that he believes the intruders are from the future or some alternate universe. Slowly, others onboard are incorporated into the conspiracy. What do the intruders want? We do not know yet. We do know that the Eagle had picked up a spy to transport to a Federation safe house for debriefing but we do not know for sure if the spy is still onboard. Only the real Captain knows and only ::coughs again:: time will tell.

Game Manager Profile - Captain Nouristao Kematsopoulos

I've simming for about ten years now. During that time I have run and participated in email and live sims. This includes different genres for the games other than just Star Trek. I've also played a wide variety of characters. My preference, at this point, is live simming, Star Trek and TOS. "Live sims" provide a fast paced, unpredictable environment for a game. As GM you never know which way your players will take a game or a clue. You have just seconds to react. I love it.

The Original Series, especially the transitional time of the movie era, gives us a marvelous time of exploration and discovery. To me idea and spirit of TOS is best summed up in Dr. Carol Marcus' words from The Wrath of Khan. "Let me show you something... - as when the world was new.

I like to apply this not just to the story lines, but behind the scenes works as well and experiment with new ideas. For example, I make customized cartoon buddy icons and full sized images for the characters, other graphics and animations for the game and websites. This includes "special effects". During the game, simmers are directed to visit a link to one of our websites learn information to use in the game. For example, visit THIS SITE and you will see an animated console with scrolling information, giving you clues that should warn you that a wormhole is opening.

My favorite part about being GM, is working one on one with simmers to help make interesting stories, plots and dilemmas for their characters and to give them plenty of opportunity to develop and "grow" their character. Next to that it is balancing different levels of play within the game to match the varied skills, intensity and interest levels of the players.

My philosophy is that a game should not run as a business or pseudo military establishment. The game is for people, not people for the game. Kindness and courtesy to other player are paramount. (No pun intended. ) The players as people come first.

On the theme of "the game is here for people," I remember one time tragedy struck one of our members. Instead of simming we just supported them the whole time we were scheduled to sim. Another time, we ran a super silly sim just to cheer someone up who was having a very hard and depressing time in their life. We ran the game as if it were a TV show whose budget got cut suddenly, complete with bloopers, extreme campiness, prop failures, and too much mascara for the men.

A few years ago I had an accident and busted up my best typing hand real bad. It wasn't properly diagnosed at the beginning and was broken in two places. Because of that arthritis set in. That made simming, especially running the game, very hard. This time my players came through for me and one of the newer ones at the time, stepped up to help me out. He is now XO and has supported me through another accident.

I think that this is what makes a great game. It is not the quality of the simmer but the quality of the people who play the game.

In real life, I like to look for ways to pull victory out of a defeat and wring the good out of a bad situation, if it won't coming willingly out. ;o)

My favorite quotes are:

"Enjoy the journey; the destination may be overrated."

"If there is no opportunity available, make one."

"Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better, the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most, that has made it possible for evil to triumph.", H.M. Haile Selassie I

Profile - Lieutenant Leah Richards

Character: LT Leah Richards, ASEC
Link to the Character's Main Page

"My name is Rachel. I am a 21 year old art major in college. I stumbled across this sim by accident about three years ago. I stuck around because I love Star Trek, and realized I love simming too. The most wonderful part to me is the chance to be someone else and really get into another character."

"I play LT Leah Ann Richards, a security officer on the USS Eagle, NCC 2185. Although she comes across as self assured and confident, she is sometimes ill at ease relating to others. Graduating from Star Fleet and being posted to the Eagle has been a bit of a dream come true and she's a little worried that someone will come along, declare it all a mistake and force her to leave. Security seemed to be a natural fit because it emphasizes hands on action over mathematics and written reports-two things Leah really dislikes. Among other dislikes, is a fellow officer, Ensign Hanson of the engineering department. Hanson is a fairly annoying person, and seems to enjoy insulting her intelligence at every opportunity. That is the hardest for Leah to accept, as his comments seem to hit a little too close to the truth."

What do you like most about simming? "Simming allows me to join the story in a way the TV show never can."

Profile - Doctor Isa

Character: Dr. Kamran Isa, AMO
Link to the Character's Main Page

"Name, Kamran Shah Isa. DOB -- about 35 standard yrs ago from "now" in the Eagle's timeline. Birthplace, Earth, Peshawar in the old NorthWest Frontier Province of what was Pakistan. Parents, Ayub Muhammad Isa and Bilquis Munwarra Isa. No siblings. Current rank, Ensign; current assignment, Assistant Medical Officer, USS Eagle, CPT. Nouristao Kematsopoulos, CO. Marital status, Single; involved with Head Nurse Ensign Rupa Lakshmi, USS Eagle.

Kamran was fascinated by medicine from an early age and decided to make a career out of healing. He attended SF Academy where he met S'Nac, T'Nal, Lakhshmi and Steven Kenylworth (his current nursing staff on Eagle) and was lucky enough to be mentored by Leonard McCoy

He can be somewhat crusty at times (evidence of McCoy's influence) but is basically always concerned for health and well being of others

Dr. Isa drinks tea for relaxation, also enjoys a good game, either with computer or with other people, of 3-D chess, of old style backgammon, or poker He is very attentive to work but knows that all work and no play makes Kamran a dull boy ;-)\

As a doctor and basically a healer, he hopes for a day when UFP is at peace with other great powers in the galaxy."

"My RL name is Eric, I live in southwest MI, am married and am 49 (will be 50 in March 2008), have loved Star Trek ever since I discovered it in 1967 (second season of original series)

I bought my first computer and got an AOL account in 1995 and was recruited for my first Sim that Summer -- a Romulan one. I became Mirok tr'Isa and have used the Isa name for many characters since.

I love role-playing and enjoy writing and have since discovered a number of Sims and Sim groups. Between 1999 and 2003 I belonged to TESA (Terran Empire Sim Assn.), which was based on the TOS episode Mirror, Mirror and the TNG novel Dark Mirror. You had to be 18 or older to get in due to adult content and context.

In 1999 I was in Interstellar Alliance serving as a LT Cmdr and as CSec/Tac and suddenly was promoted to Rear Admiral and 3rd in command of the whole organization -- complete surprise. I realize that transferred me off of a Sim but then I found I could create my own. It was an e-mail Sim called SF RES Golden Eagle -- a stolen Romulan Warbird owned and operated by the Federation and I was CO. Golden Eagle was finally put to bed in 2006 and now its successor, RES Osprey, a Romulan e-mail sim, is managing to somehow plod onwards.

I don't remember how I discovered USS Eagle -- my computer here crashed some months back leaving me with some huge gaps in memory but I've enjoyed the whole experience -- even if I have to keep the language and stuff down to PG level ;-) "

What do you like most about simming? "Meeting new people, having fun, making friends and just getting away from reality -- it's a nice form of escapism."

Future of the USS Eagle

Future story lines with pending titles include: "The Keys to Eden" A fantasty/adventure style sim where we must undertake a quest on a planet with seven kingdoms in seven different biospheres and hunt for clues and objects to "fix" something. I won't say what ;o) The characters will end up dressing undercover as inhabitants of the planet to conduct the quests. Will it be seventh heaven where our heroes end up or some place else much much hotter?

"At What Price, Freedom" A rescue mission to liberate prisoners from a Klingon camp. Some secrets are best kept.

"Mates and Maties" The return of the Orion pirates, who have sworn vengeance on certain crew members and will get their chance to keep their vows, but their wives have other ideas.

"Never Say Never" A rescue mission to be conducted as Praxis explodes. How much trouble can it be to rescue one person who doesn't want it? Come and find out!

"Angel in Shades of Gray" The return of a beautiful half Romulan, half Human double agent. What side will she be on this time and for how long?

So stay 'tooned for further developments as we say on the Eagle !!
